Animated word-by-word captions: what they are and how to make them

Updated 6 October 2026

Animated word-by-word captions show a short phrase on screen and highlight each word exactly as it is spoken. To make them you need a transcript with a start and end time for every word, then a style that animates the words. CaptionOS does both: it times every word of Hinglish, Hindi, Urdu or English speech and offers 17 animated styles you can customise.

What makes them work

  • Word timing. Each word lights up when it is said, so the eye follows the voice. This needs real per-word timing, not one time for a whole sentence.
  • Short phrases. Two to four words at a time can be read at a glance.
  • Contrast. Heavy type with an outline, shadow or background panel stays readable on any footage.
  • Emphasis. One highlighted word per phrase (a colour, a bigger size, a pop) tells the viewer what matters.
  • Motion that suits the video. A calm explainer and a fast meme edit need different entrances.

How to make them in CaptionOS

  1. Sign up free and upload your video in a New project.
  2. Choose the language. Every word comes back with its own start and end time.
  3. Pick a style. The 17 styles are Pop, Glow, Scribble, Delhi, Aura, Blockbuster, Gazette, Signal, Velvet, Terminal, Postcard, Uplift, Goldcast, Limelight, Contrast, Statement and Creator.
  4. Tune it: 13 typefaces, weight, size, case, colours for the text and the spoken word, outline, shadow, glow, background panel, placement, words per phrase and motion speed.
  5. Select a word on the video to recolour it or give it emphasis. Save the look as your own style to reuse it.
  6. Export the MP4 (1080p, or up to 4K on Creator and Pro).

Fixing timing

If a caption comes in early or late, drag or trim its block on the timeline. Editing a word keeps its timing, so corrections don’t throw off the highlight.

What it costs

The Free plan includes 2 minutes of transcription a month and exports up to 2 minutes long at 1080p with a small watermark; paid plans start at ₹49 a week (Weekly) and remove the watermark. See pricing.

Questions

Do these captions work for Hindi and Urdu?

Yes. Every style has typefaces for Devanagari and Urdu script, and Urdu is laid out right to left.

Can I use my own colours and fonts?

You can recolour every part of a style and choose from 13 typefaces. Uploading your own font files isn’t available yet.

Does the export look the same as the preview?

Yes. The MP4 is rendered by the same caption renderer you see in the editor.
